Second place last year wasn't good enough for Trader Joe's. When the final votes were tallied at the end of 2011, the long-running grocery store had flip-flopped positions with its closest competition, and the winner from last year, Fry's.
The first store opened in 1958, and back then it was called Pronto Markets. It wasn't until 1967 that the named changed to Trader Joe's and the franchise was born.
They call themselves "Your Neighborhood Grocery Store" and for the year of 2012, they can lay claim to being Ahwatukee Foothills favorite place to buy groceries.
