Phoenix Symphony tickets on sale Aug. 1

Individual tickets for the Phoenix Symphony's 2010/11 season will go on sale Sunday, Aug. 1, and may be purchased through the box office by calling (602) 495-1999 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or online at www.phoenixsymphony.org beginning at midnight. This exciting season includes the US Airways Classics, APS Pops and Target Family Series with more than 200 concerts and presentations in downtown Phoenix and throughout the Valley.

The season will feature collaborations such as the semi-staged co-production "The Music Man" (Sept. 10 to 12) with Phoenix Theatre and "Elijah" (Feb. 3 to 5) with the Phoenix Art Museum. Other season highlights include "Boléro" (Sept. 23 to 25), "Handel's Messiah" (Dec. 9 to 19), "Brandenburg Festival" (Jan. 14 to 17), "Cirque de la Symphonie" (Feb. 25 to 27), the two-week "World's Greatest Piano Concerto Festival" (May 5 to 14) and "The Red Violin" (May 19 and 21) featuring Concertmaster Steven Moeckel.

During the Holocaust, the works of numerous composers were banned and entire schools of composition were eradicated while small pockets of music thrived in concentration camps across Eastern Europe. Throughout the 2010/11 season, The Phoenix Symphony will explore and perform many of these works for the first time in its series "Rediscovered Masters." These composers include such masters as Pavel Haas, Mieczyslaw Weinberg, Hans Krása, Erwin Schuloff, Marcel Tyberg and Kurt Weill. Throughout the season, The Phoenix Symphony and the Arizona State University Center for Jewish Studies, in conjunction with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will present a series of lectures, films and discussions around the Valley, linking the musical presentations to the cultural and historical themes of assimilation, modernization, destruction and remembrance.

ASU Gammage hosting season open house

ASU Gammage will share details about its new Broadway season during an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, at 1200 S. Forest Ave. in Tempe.

This free event will include free food from Tempe's La Bocca Pizzeria & Wine Bar and a special 20-minute behind-the-scenes video about the award-winning shows coming to ASU Gammage in the 2010/11 season. Plus, guests will enjoy exclusive performances by cast members from Shrek the Musical and Billy Elliot the Musical. Attendees will have a chance to win season subscriptions, an overnight theater package in Las Vegas and other hotel and restaurant giveaways.

ASU Gammage's lineup for the 2010/11 Progressive Broadway Across America - Arizona series includes Young Frankenstein, Sept. 27 to Oct. 3; Hair, Dec. 7 to 12; Shrek the Musical, Jan. 4 to 9; 9 to 5: The Musical, Feb. 22 to 27; Fiddler on the Roof, March 29 to April 3; Billy Elliot the Musical, April 27 to May 8; and Mamma Mia!, May 17 to 22.

Special engagements include NETworks presents Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Oct. 19 to 24; How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Nov. 17 to 21; and Les Misérables, June 7 to 12.

New subscriptions are on sale now, and season subscriptions start at $124. Single tickets will go on sale to the general public Aug. 9.

Audition call for Phoenix Children's Chorus East Valley location

This season marks the inauguration of the East Valley Chapter of the Phoenix Children's Chorus with rehearsals to be held in Chandler. Members of the satellite Chapter will be part of the Phoenix Children's Chorus main stage performances and activities, but have the convenience of the East Valley rehearsal location for those families located in that part of the city.

Final auditions for the 2010/11 Season for students entering second through fifth grades will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at Sirrine Elementary School, 591 W. Mesquite St., Chandler. The choir will also be hosting auditions at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Phoenix Center for the Arts, 1202 N. Third St., Phoenix, for boys and girls entering second through twelfth grade.

Trashy Sculpture Show announces call for entries

As a fundraiser for the Grand Avenue Merchants' Association (GAMA), the Bragg's Pie Factory at 1301 Grand Ave. will host the annual Trashy Sculpture Show on Saturday, Sept. 25, as part of the quirky Grand Avenue Festival. The Trashy Sculpture Show will be one of many events taking place during the all day event along the Lower Grand Avenue Corridor.

All work for the exhibit must be made primarily out of trash or recycled materials, with a limit of three pieces per contributor and an entry fee of $ 10 per piece. Works can be for sale (or not). The entry fees will go directly to GAMA, and if work is sold, 70% of the proceeds will go to the artist with 30% donated to GAMA. Children's projects are welcome; entry fees will be waived for school groups.

The exhibit will be on display at the Pie Factory for the festival as well as during October and November for the First Fridays and Third Fridays of the month.

Call for entries for Hanging Gardens, Woven Fences project

As part of this year's upcoming Grand Avenue Festival on Sept. 25, the Kooky Krafts Shop will be hosting a Hanging Gardens, Woven Fences project along Lower Grand Avenue. The $ 15 entry fee will be donated in it's entirety to the Grand Avenue Merchants' Association.

Artists/fabricators will be paired with property owners who would like to have projects installed on their trees or fences, with an emphasis on those that line Grand Avenue. A map of projects and participants will be provided to festival-goers. Participants are responsible for their own set up and break down at the end of the project.

Calling teen writers, artists for Teen Zine

Teens between the ages of 12 and 18 who compose poetry, write short stories, etch cartoons or capture photographic images are invited to submit their works for publication in the 2010 Teen Zine, a Maricopa County Library District magazine that showcases original teen art and creative writing.

Deadline for submissions is Sept. 20, and up to three creative works per person may be submitted for evaluation.

Every district library is accepting entries. Entries can also be mailed to Maricopa County Library District, 2700 N. Central Ave., Suite 700, Phoenix 85004.

One of the arts submissions will be chosen for the Zine cover via website voting. Teens who want their art considered for the cover should designate their interest on their entry form.

Some short stories longer than the standard two-page submission will be accepted for web-only publication. Teens interested in submitting longer short stories should contact their local branch for details. Longer short stories should be sent via e-mail to adriennestrock@mcldaz.org or saved on disk and mailed.

The 2010 Teen Zine will be published and circulated in district libraries and other county government facilities by December. Entries selected for the Zine will also appear on the library district's website.

ACT hosting auditions for Board

Auditions for the Teen Board, Pre-Teen and Children's Board will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Ahwatukee Children's Theatre, 5051 E. Elliot Road.

Sixty boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 18 are needed to represent the first Teen Board, Pre-Teen and Children's Board. Those selected will be ambassadors of their communities and Chandler Fashion Center. The program is a 10-month commitment made up of fashion shows, theatrical merchandising, mall marketing events and community outreach initiatives, monthly workshops and training and the privilege to represent their peers on these elite boards. At the end of the program, three outstanding members will be awarded Mall gift cards.

Free ‘Sketching in the Galleries' summer activity at SMoCA

After the success of last summer's series of free "staycation" programs and events offered at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), the all-ages Sketching in the Galleries Workshop is back by popular demand. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, in the Museum's lobby at 7374 E. Second St. in Downtown Scottsdale.

This summer's sketching event will allow participants the opportunity to explore and sketch a "sense of place" in the exhibitions Re-imagining the West: Selections from the Permanent Collection and Spyhopping: Adventures with Sue Chenoweth and the Permanent Collection.

The workshop is free and open to the public. No previous drawing experience is necessary. The Museum asks that children be accompanied by an adult. DCI's "Big, Loud & Live 7" World Championship Quarterfinals thunders into movie theaters

The pounding rhythms, precise formations and pulsating beats of the Drum Corps International's (DCI) World Championship Quarterfinals once again march into movie theaters in the exclusive, annual event Big, Loud & Live 7. This rousing competition, featuring teams of world class brass musicians, percussionists and color guard performers, will be broadcast live from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to nearly 500 select movie theaters on Thursday, Aug. 12. Locally, the event will begin at 3:30 p.m. at AMC Ahwatukee 24, 4915 E. Ray Road. Tickets are available online at www.FathomEvents.com and the box office.

Presented by NCM Fathom and DCI, Big, Loud & Live 7 will feature more than five hours of electrifying performances from 23 drum corps (including The Academy from Tempe) competing in the 2010 DCI World Championship Quarterfinals. Phoenix Boys Choir auditions resume in August

Auditions for the Phoenix Boys Choir will take place on Saturdays Aug. 21, Sept. 11, Sept. 25, Oct. 16 and Nov. 13 at 1131 E. Missouri Ave. Auditions are open to boys beginning at age 7 for the first two choir levels -Training and Cadet. Boys will be a part of one of America's largest and most prestigious choirs and will join 60 years of excellence, earn a sophisticated musical education, learn multi-cultural music and make lifetime friendships.

Eligible boys should possess an unchanged, clear and pleasant singing voice and a good "ear" for music. Previous choir experience is not required, and there is no need to prepare audition material. Families will be informed immediately after the audition if the boy is accepted and at which choir level he will begin. Boys selected to join the choirs will be invited to become active members of the choir directly following their acceptance. Scholarships and financial aid for tuition and other costs are available.

Cult classic ‘Reefer Madness' returns to theaters

Fans of the legendary hit show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) and Internet sensation RiffTrax.com are in for a hilarious night of live comedy on Thursday, Aug. 19, when NCM Fathom, Something Awful and RiffTrax team up again to present RiffTrax LIVE: Reefer Madness in More than 470 movie theaters nationwide. AMC Ahwatukee 24 will host a showing at 8 p.m. at 4915 E. Ray Road, with an encore on Tuesday, Aug. 24. Tickets are $12.50.

The creative team behind MST3K - Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett - will reunite on the big screen for an evening of live riffing on the 1936 cult classic feature that warned generations of Americans against the horrors of excessive marijuana consumption. September at the Mesa Arts Center

Experience the rhythms, beats, sights and theatrics as the fall season kicks off from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Childsplay offers school tours for upcoming year

Childsplay is a professional theater company for young audiences that performs publicly at the Tempe Center for the Arts. In addition to public performances, Childsplay has been touring all across the state to Arizona's schools since 1977, and the school tour program remains a cornerstone of the company today. Each year, Childsplay creates productions that are specifically designed to be performed in schools, libraries, community centers and other indoor spaces. Schools do not need to have a stage, lighting instruments or other theatrical requirements. Sets and costumes, sound equipment and actors pack into a van and come to your school.

An in-depth resource guide is also developed for each play to be used by teachers with students or parents with their children to deepen their appreciation of the theatre experience and to promote literacy and learning. Resource guides contain a plot outline, booklist for further reading, discussion ideas, puzzles and games related to the shows and curriculum-related pre- and post-show activities. They also provide ways to fulfill the Arizona Arts Standards in the classroom.

Two touring shows, New Kid and The Imaginators, are available for the 2010-11 season. New Kid is available October to December, and The Imaginators is offered February to March. Both shows are appropriate for grades K to six.

MAC Foundation continues free-rent theater program for local arts groups

The Mesa Arts Center Foundation, in cooperation with the Mesa Arts Center, is continuing to offer a limited number of "free-rent" dates in the Mesa Arts Center's theaters. The dates will be available for use by local non-profit organizations who want to present arts and cultural education programs during the 2010/11 season. Not-for-profit educational institutions are also eligible for this offering.

The Foundation is currently soliciting proposals from local arts groups for its Arts and Cultural Education Sponsorship ("ACES") Program. Priority will be given to applications received by Aug. 1. An application is available at www.mesaartscenter.com/foundation.htm. or by e-mailing newmacaz@aol.com.

Sponsorships will be available for a single presentation on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday next season. The Foundation will underwrite the theater rental costs and facility restoration fees that are normally charged for groups performing at the Mesa Arts Center. Technical and Front-of-House staff service fees will be the responsibility of the successful applicants.

The selection of sponsorship recipients for next season will be made solely by the Mesa Arts Center Foundation.

Valley Youth Theatre announces 22nd season lineup

Valley Youth Theatre's 22nd season lineup will include Grease, Aug. 13 to 29; Pinkalicious, the Musical, Oct. 1 to 17; A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail, Dec. 3 to 23; Alice in Wonderland, Feb. 4 to 20; and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, April 1 to 17. The 2010/11 season ends with a return to the newly renovated Herberger Theater Center June 10 to 26 with Annie.

Summer program self portraits sought for Faces of Afterschool Art Project

Children and youth participating in summer programs statewide are being asked to create self portraits for possible display at an art exhibit this fall at the Children's Museum of Phoenix to raise awareness of afterschool programs in Arizona.

Through the Faces of Afterschool Art Project, young artists from 5 to 17 years of age can use any two-dimensional medium (paintings, drawings, prints, photography, digital art, collages, etc.) to capture their personalities. Artwork must be on 8.5 by 11-inch paper and submitted by Aug. 30.

‘Dine Out with the Chefs' celebrates 5 delicious years

One of the Valley's premier culinary events, Dine Out with the Chefs, celebrates its fifth anniversary in grand style on Sunday, Oct. 3, with a new roster of outstanding chefs, live entertainment by the Beth Lederman Trio and other surprises. The event will run from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St., Scottsdale.

Dine Out with the Chefs offers guests the opportunity to mingle with more than 20 of the Valley's top chefs and to sample their culinary creations, from delicious soups, salads and appetizers to some of their signature dishes and most decadent desserts. Also on the menu is a book signing with Pamela Swartz, event founder and author of Dine Out Phoenix: Where to Eat from Chic to Unique.

Mesa Arts Center and National Geographic announce a riveting line-up of events for the fourth season of the Arizona speaker series. National Geographic Live will showcase four of National Geographic's most beloved explorers.

Bret Michaels to headline at State Fair Oct. 23

Bret Michaels, first time ever Poison front man and Celebrity Apprentice winner, will headline at the Arizona State Fair on Saturday, Oct. 23. Childsplay unleashes a season of hits for 2010/11

Childsplay, Arizona's award-winning theater company for young audiences, announces a season filled with unsurpassed crowd-pleasers, including a Tony-nominated musical, brilliant adaptations of classic children's stories, original work and the return of that sell-out star, Junie B. Jones!

Arizona State University Gammage has secured its lineup for the 2010/11 Progressive Broadway Across America - Arizona series.
