The Summer Comedy Series will showcase headline comedians starting at 8 p.m. Fridays this summer in the Ovations Live! Showroom at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino, 5040 Wild Horse Pass Blvd., Chandler.

Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax concert coming to movie theaters
The “Big Four” - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax - are bringing their historic European tour to the global stage via satellite to 800 movie theaters around the world in a special high definition cinematic event. These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980s to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants have never shared the same stage until now.
The legendary June 22 concert from the tour’s stop at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria, will be presented in the U.S. in more than 450 theaters in over 140 markets at 7:30 p.m. local time on the same day by NCM Fathom. The event will be broadcast into theaters in Europe, Canada and Latin America through other international exhibitor partnerships. Delayed screenings are also planned in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

Summer Movie Madness for kids at MADCAP Theaters
Summer Movie Madness will run through Aug. 6 at MADCAP Theaters, 730 S. Mill Ave., Tempe.

Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band offers free summer concert
The Ahwatukee Foothills Concert band will perform a free concert starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at the Ahwatukee Recreation Center, 5001 E. Cheyenne Drive.
The band will perform some of the greatest music of the American West, from film to the concert halls, with beloved folk tunes, Copland’s Rodeo and Hoe-Down, music from classic song-writers and much more. The band will also celebrate music from the stages of Broadway.
Then, celebrate our nation’s birthday (as well as the birthday of the band’s founder, Crawford McClue) by singing and clapping along with your favorite patriotic songs and marches celebrating our country and the men and women in uniform who so selflessly serve it.
The evening will be a monumental musical celebration that only a 60-piece ensemble of shimmering brass, winds and percussion can bring.

ASU Art Museum hosting summer family exhibition
The 11th annual Summer Family Exhibition, What Moves Us: Art of Transportation from the Permanent Collection, is on display through Sept. 4 at the Arizona State University Art Museum at Mill Avenue and Tenth Street in Tempe. Learn about modes of transportation from paintings, sculpture and prints. Hands-on activities throughout the exhibition will get your imagination moving, too.

Phoenix Opera receives SPAA grant
The Sundome Performing Arts Association (SPAA) recently awarded a major grant to Phoenix Opera. Twenty-five local non-profit organizations received a total of over $2 million in “Grants for the Arts” ranging from $16,000 to $200,000 to help maintain the vitality of the arts in the northwest valley and fill the void left by the closing of Sundome Theatre.
The grant will fund Phoenix Opera’s production of The Magic of Opera for All Generations that will be performed at Valley Vista High School Oct. 22 and 23. Phoenix Opera will also produce a Saturday evening performance at the high school for the general public. Tickets will be available at www.phoenixopera.org.
The company will also stage a gala performance of the second act of Die Fledermaus in Prescott on July 24 for the reopening of the newly restored 1905 Opera House.
Phoenix Opera’s upcoming 2010/11 season features Mozart’s The Magic Flute Dec. 3 and 5. The work is in the popular form of a Singspiel, which includes both singing and spoken dialogue.

Childsplay offers school tours for upcoming year
Childsplay is a professional theater company for young audiences that performs publicly at the Tempe Center for the Arts. In addition to public performances, Childsplay has been touring all across the state to Arizona's schools since 1977, and the school tour program remains a cornerstone of the company today. Each year, Childsplay creates productions that are specifically designed to be performed in schools, libraries, community centers and other indoor spaces. Schools do not need to have a stage, lighting instruments or other theatrical requirements. Sets and costumes, sound equipment and actors pack into a van and come to your school.
An in-depth resource guide is also developed for each play to be used by teachers with students or parents with their children to deepen their appreciation of the theatre experience and to promote literacy and learning. Resource guides contain a plot outline, booklist for further reading, discussion ideas, puzzles and games related to the shows and curriculum-related pre- and post-show activities. They also provide ways to fulfill the Arizona Arts Standards in the classroom.
Two touring shows, New Kid and The Imaginators, are available for the 2010-11 season. New Kid is available October to December, and The Imaginators is offered February to March. Both shows are appropriate for grades K to six.

Pueblo Grande earns rare distinction for the 2nd time
Phoenix’s Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park has, for the second time, earned a rare distinction from the American Association of Museums.
The honor from the association recognizes Pueblo Grande Museum’s success in achieving its mission and goals as well as using best practices and meeting or exceeding museum standards. The museum first earned accreditation in 1999.
Pueblo Grande Museum is located at 4619 E. Washington St., the site of a 1,500 year-old Hohokam village.

Jazz in the Garden

MAC Foundation continues free-rent theater program for local arts groups
The Mesa Arts Center Foundation, in cooperation with the Mesa Arts Center, is continuing to offer a limited number of “free-rent” dates in the Mesa Arts Center’s theaters. The dates will be available for use by local non-profit organizations who want to present arts and cultural education programs during the 2010/11 season. Not-for-profit educational institutions are also eligible for this offering.
The Foundation is currently soliciting proposals from local arts groups for its Arts and Cultural Education Sponsorship (“ACES”) Program. Priority will be given to applications received by Aug. 1. Sponsorships will be available for a single presentation on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday next season. The Foundation will underwrite the theater rental costs and facility restoration fees that are normally charged for groups performing at the Mesa Arts Center. Technical and Front-of-House staff service fees will be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
The selection of sponsorship recipients for next season will be made solely by the Mesa Arts Center Foundation.
Childsplay unleashes a season of hits for 2010/11
Childsplay, Arizona’s award-winning theater company for young audiences, announces a season filled with unsurpassed crowd-pleasers, including a Tony-nominated musical, brilliant adaptations of classic children’s stories, original work and the return of that sell-out star, Junie B. Jones!

Arizona State University Gammage has secured its lineup for the 2010/11 Progressive Broadway Across America – Arizona series.
