Film industry economic impact report
Despite a national and local recession and dip in total dollars spent, the Phoenix film industry remained relatively consistent with the number of jobs created in fiscal year 2009/10.
The economic impact of the film industry resulted in $25.5 million spent locally on film-related wages, construction materials and equipment rentals as well as non-film-related retail stores, hotels, car rentals and other businesses. This is down $9.5 million from last year. Although the number of jobs created was relatively the same, compared to last year, the dip in overall economic impact is attributed to smaller budgets for industry projects.
In fiscal year 2009-10, the Phoenix Film Office issued 146 film permits for projects including feature films, commercials, still photography, documentaries, music videos, corporate/industrial films, web casts and more. Overall, Greater Phoenix attracted 380 film projects to the Valley and employed 3,796 film-industry talent, technicians, carpenters, and crew; shot for 1,653 days; and accumulated 5,253 hotel nights.
Phoenix was the scene for 123 commercials, 42 still photography shoots, four reality shows, 51 television specials, 23 documentaries and 11 feature movies. Among the many projects in Phoenix, Hollywood headliner Will Ferrell starred in "Everything Must Go," which shot in the Arcadia neighborhood among other locations in and around Phoenix.

SMoCA inaugurates the fall season with art and fashion
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is once again celebrating its newest fall lineup of exhibitions with a public opening reception bash on Friday, Oct. 8. The fete features five new exhibitions, curatorial gallery talks and mingling with the artists followed by a special fashion runway show highlighting Valley designer finalists competing for Scottsdale Fashion Week's annual Designer of the Year title. Donna Summer to headline Phoenix Symphony benefit
Five-time Grammy award winner Donna Summer will headline "THE Concert," the new annual benefit for The Phoenix Symphony featuring a grand evening of music, dinner and dancing, starting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16. The annual concert previously took place on New Year's Eve. "THE Encore" dinner party will follow in The Ballroom at Civic Plaza with dinner and dancing featuring short performances by some of the Valley's most talented young musicians.

Childsplay program receives funding for early childhood educators
Childsplay, Arizona's award-winning theatre company for young audiences, is one of three Helios Education Foundation grant recipients for programs aligned with the Foundation's Early Childhood Theory of Change. Grants were awarded for development of programs which are designed to strengthen the literacy and language acquisition knowledge and education of early childhood teachers, professionals and other providers working with children ages birth to five. In addition to funding for Childsplay, other recipients include the Early Learning Coalition of Polk County in Manatee and Sarasota counties in Florida, and Paradise Valley Community College in partnership with Central Arizona College.

These composers include such masters as Pavel Haas, Mieczyslaw Weinberg, Hans Krása, Erwin Schuloff, Marcel Tyberg and Kurt Weill. ‘America's Got Talent' nationwide tour coming to Phoenix, tickets on sale

The house that Phoenix Theatre built
Phoenix Theatre's production team is currently constructing a three ton set for Noises Off, the first show in Phoenix Theatre's 90th Mainstage season.
Noises Off runs Aug. 25 through Sept. 12 at the theater at 100 E. McDowell Road. The show pushes farce as far as it can go, following the onstage and backstage antics of a fifth-rate acting troupe touring in a new, horribly-written sex farce called Nothing On. The show is complete with slamming doors, characters falling down the stairs, windows breaking and a plate of sardines that continues to go missing. Each act is packed with more laughs than the one before it.

Tickets now on sale for La Traviata and The Magic Flute
Phoenix Opera has announced that tickets are now on sale for its 2010/11 season, which will feature two of the most beloved operas in the repertoire. Mozart's The Magic Flute will be presented on Dec. 3 and 5, and Verdi's La Traviata on March 4 and 6 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix.

Schools delivering arts education programs with few dedicated resources
The first statewide Arizona Arts Education Census shows that many Arizona schools have found ways to deliver arts education programs with few dedicated resources.
Results from the statewide research show that nearly 90 percent of Arizona students have access to at least one arts education program, but that half of the schools responding to the survey reported no budget for curricular support in arts education and almost eight out of 10 schools spent less than half-a-penny a day on arts education.
The Census, conducted between March 15 and Sept. 15, 2009 by New Jersey-based Quadrant Arts Education Research on behalf of the Arizona Department of Education, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts, produced responses from 409 charter and district schools representing 236,645 students in every county and school district in the state.

Trashy Sculpture Show announces call for entries
As a fundraiser for the Grand Avenue Merchants' Association (GAMA), the Bragg's Pie Factory at 1301 Grand Ave. will host the annual Trashy Sculpture Show on Saturday, Sept. 25, as part of the quirky Grand Avenue Festival. The Trashy Sculpture Show will be one of many events taking place during the all day event along the Lower Grand Avenue Corridor.
All work for the exhibit must be made primarily out of trash or recycled materials, with a limit of three pieces per contributor and an entry fee of $ 10 per piece. Works can be for sale (or not). The entry fees will go directly to GAMA, and if work is sold, 70% of the proceeds will go to the artist with 30% donated to GAMA. Children's projects are welcome; entry fees will be waived for school groups.

Call for entries for Hanging Gardens, Woven Fences project
As part of this year's upcoming Grand Avenue Festival on Sept. 25, the Kooky Krafts Shop will be hosting a Hanging Gardens, Woven Fences project along Lower Grand Avenue. The $ 15 entry fee will be donated in it's entirety to the Grand Avenue Merchants' Association.
Artists/fabricators will be paired with property owners who would like to have projects installed on their trees or fences, with an emphasis on those that line Grand Avenue. Calling teen writers, artists for Teen Zine
Teens between the ages of 12 and 18 who compose poetry, write short stories, etch cartoons or capture photographic images are invited to submit their works for publication in the 2010 Teen Zine, a Maricopa County Library District magazine that showcases original teen art and creative writing.
Deadline for submissions is Sept. 20, and up to three creative works per person may be submitted for evaluation.
Every district library is accepting entries. Entries can also be mailed to Maricopa County Library District, 2700 N. Central Ave., Suite 700, Phoenix 85004.
One of the arts submissions will be chosen for the Zine cover via website voting. Teens who want their art considered for the cover should designate their interest on their entry form.
Some short stories longer than the standard two-page submission will be accepted for web-only publication. Teens interested in submitting longer short stories should contact their local branch for details. Longer short stories should be sent via e-mail to email@example.com or saved on disk and mailed.
The 2010 Teen Zine will be published and circulated in district libraries and other county government facilities by December. Entries selected for the Zine will also appear on the library district's website.

Phoenix Boys Choir auditions resume in August
Auditions for the Phoenix Boys Choir will take place on Saturdays Aug. 21, Sept. 11, Sept. 25, Oct. 16 and Nov. 13 at 1131 E. Missouri Ave. Auditions are open to boys beginning at age 7 for the first two choir levels -Training and Cadet. Boys will be a part of one of America's largest and most prestigious choirs and will join 60 years of excellence, earn a sophisticated musical education, learn multi-cultural music and make lifetime friendships.
Eligible boys should possess an unchanged, clear and pleasant singing voice and a good "ear" for music. Previous choir experience is not required, and there is no need to prepare audition material. Cult classic ‘Reefer Madness' returns to theaters
Fans of the legendary hit show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) and Internet sensation RiffTrax.com are in for a hilarious night of live comedy on Thursday, Aug. 19, when NCM Fathom, Something Awful and RiffTrax team up again to present RiffTrax LIVE: Reefer Madness in More than 470 movie theaters nationwide. Chandler Center for the Arts announces grand re-opening season
After a yearlong renovation, Chandler Center for the Arts (250 N. Arizona Ave., Chandler) is once again ready to host great performances this coming season.

Childsplay offers school tours for upcoming year
Childsplay is a professional theater company for young audiences that performs publicly at the Tempe Center for the Arts. In addition to public performances, Childsplay has been touring all across the state to Arizona's schools since 1977, and the school tour program remains a cornerstone of the company today. Each year, Childsplay creates productions that are specifically designed to be performed in schools, libraries, community centers and other indoor spaces. Schools do not need to have a stage, lighting instruments or other theatrical requirements. Sets and costumes, sound equipment and actors pack into a van and come to your school.
An in-depth resource guide is also developed for each play to be used by teachers with students or parents with their children to deepen their appreciation of the theatre experience and to promote literacy and learning. Resource guides contain a plot outline, booklist for further reading, discussion ideas, puzzles and games related to the shows and curriculum-related pre- and post-show activities. They also provide ways to fulfill the Arizona Arts Standards in the classroom.
Two touring shows, New Kid and The Imaginators, are available for the 2010-11 season. New Kid is available October to December, and The Imaginators is offered February to March. Both shows are appropriate for grades K to six.

MAC Foundation continues free-rent theater program for local arts groups
The Mesa Arts Center Foundation, in cooperation with the Mesa Arts Center, is continuing to offer a limited number of "free-rent" dates in the Mesa Arts Center's theaters. The dates will be available for use by local non-profit organizations who want to present arts and cultural education programs during the 2010/11 season. Not-for-profit educational institutions are also eligible for this offering.
The Foundation is currently soliciting proposals from local arts groups for its Arts and Cultural Education Sponsorship ("ACES") Program. An application is available at www.mesaartscenter.com/foundation.htm. or by e-mailing email@example.com.
Sponsorships will be available for a single presentation on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday next season. The Foundation will underwrite the theater rental costs and facility restoration fees that are normally charged for groups performing at the Mesa Arts Center. Technical and Front-of-House staff service fees will be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
The selection of sponsorship recipients for next season will be made solely by the Mesa Arts Center Foundation.
Summer program self portraits sought for Faces of Afterschool Art Project
Children and youth participating in summer programs statewide are being asked to create self portraits for possible display at an art exhibit this fall at the Children's Museum of Phoenix to raise awareness of afterschool programs in Arizona.
Through the Faces of Afterschool Art Project, young artists from 5 to 17 years of age can use any two-dimensional medium (paintings, drawings, prints, photography, digital art, collages, etc.) to capture their personalities. Artwork must be on 8.5 by 11-inch paper and submitted by Aug. 30.

New season for Sonoran Desert Chorale
The Sonoran Desert Chorale kicks off its "Pathways in Song" season with its first concert, In Search of Light, Oct. 9 at First United Church in Mesa and Oct. 10 at the Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley. World famous Rockettes offer new Christmas show
The Radio City Christmas Spectacular's beloved holiday show will thrill the entire family during four shows Dec. 1 and 2 at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
This newest production was specifically designed for large-scale venues and replicates on a grand scale the exact production of The Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The Christmas Spectacular is truly unique in its universal appeal to people of all ages and celebrates Christmas with show-stopping Rockette numbers, dazzling costumes, dramatic arena lighting effects, breathtaking imagery and festive musical compositions.
