HIGH ENERGY: Lunch time draws a crowd at Ra Sushi in Scottsdale.

Paul O'Neill

Calling all sushi lovers and competitive eaters: A Sushi Showdown sushi-eating contest will take place 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at RA Sushi restaurants in Mesa, Tempe, Ahwatukee, North Scottsdale and Old Town Scottsdale.

One winner from each location will walk away with a grand prize of free sushi for one year.

The college basketball championship-inspired competition will be organized in a bracket system. Competitors will race against the clock and one another in a series of heats to get to the final round.

Tootsy Makis — rolls made with crab mix, shrimp, cucumber and crunchy tempura bits — are on the timed-eating menu.

The grand prize will come in the form of 12 $50 RA Sushi gift certificates. The second place winner will receive a $100 RA Sushi gift certificate, third place will receive a $50 RA Sushi gift certificate, and fourth place will win a $25 RA Sushi gift certificate.

All participants will receive a RA Sushi sweatband, plus a complimentary appetizer or lunch card good for use on a return visit.

The Sushi Showdown is limited to the first 24 entries per location, and applications are available at any RA Sushi. The deadline to register is April 4, and all competitors must be at least 18 years old to participate.

East Valley RA Sushi restaurants are at 1652 S. Val Vista Drive in Mesa and 411 S. Mill Ave. in Tempe.
