Q: I'm going to a Beautillion. I don't know if I should wear church or wedding attire? I want to be comfortable and not over dressed. Help! - Bev W., Tempe
A: Great question, Bev. It's been my experience that less is more and it's all about the shoes. A simple dress, some pearls on your wrist or around your neck. Multi-color pearls would work perfectly. I suggest your shoes make the statement. Try some that are not even close to the color of the dress. You should avoid the temptation to match everything. Your shoes will make the statement and set the tone for your look. This will give you the elegance of, say, something you'd wear to a wedding and the flash of what you might wear to a fashion show. Keep your handbag simple and small. Remember, it's about the shoes. Hair up or down, style it. This is not the time for the relaxed, toss-up. An elegant ponytail would do well framed by some simple stud earrings. Finally, be mindful of undergarment lines. Don't just wear an outfit, create a look.
Q: I'm going to a five-star restaurant for dinner and then to a basketball game. How do I transition? - Charlotte T., Phoenix
A: The good news is we live in Phoenix. Attire at a five-star restaurant is a little more forgiving here. I would go for a ruffled white blouse and black suit jacket with no neck jewelry and small hoop earrings. Pair this up with a nice pair of dark blue denim jeans. Darker jeans are better for evening. The jeans should be plain with narrow legs. Not necessarily skinny and with few embellishments. Keep it simple. The statement comes from your blouse and handbag. Add some low-heeled, denim pumps like those in the photo. Finally your handbag should be the biggest, name brand you have. At the basketball game, this will boost your compliment meter. Wear it well. Have fun.
