Proceeds from an Ahwatukee Foothills car show this weekend will benefit Operation Homefront, an organization that assists the service men and women of the U.S. military.
The Ahwatukee Discount Tire Car Show will take place on Saturday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Discount Tire in Ahwatukee, 4831 E. Chandler Blvd. There will be more than 35 cars on display in the parking lot. The cost will be $30 to enter and visitors will receive a free meal and the chance to look at some hot rods and customized cars up close.
One of those is Gary Yea ger’s custom 1936 Chevrolet Sedan Flat Back. The car has special meaning for Yeager, whose father was a mechanic and worked on similar cars when he was growing up.
“I grew up with muscle cars but my heroes were driving these,” he said. “This particular one is unique because it’s a flat back. This is a city car, what they called a ‘salesman special.’”
Yeager has had the car for about five years and has taken it to shows all over the Phoenix-metro area.
This car show hits home with Yeager, who is an ex-U.S. Air Force officer. Similarly, his daughter will soon be graduating from the University of Arizona through the Air Force ROTC program.
“I knew about Operation Homefront and all the good they do for the military,” he said. “Especially with the economy and how young these kids are, (Operation Homefront) definitely helps them out.”
This will be the first time Discount Tire in Ahwatukee Foothills will be hosting the event. Last year, event organizer Joe Molera put it on in Sierra Vista.
“It’s just a real neat thing we can do for them,” Molera said. “These guys with vintage cars want to show them off and the people really enjoy seeing them.”
