High School Musical madness is coming to Ahwatukee Foothills.

The second installment of the mega-hit Disney franchise, which has three movies and counting, is being performed at the Ahwatukee Children's Theatre this weekend.

Fans of the series will appreciate that the performance is sticking true to the film version, said director Melissa Snow.

"There are little changes here and there just because we have to adapt it to our situation," she said. "But it's a fun performance with a great cast."

This will be the shortest turn around for the community theater. The cast and crew only had two weeks between their first rehearsal and performance.

There will be three shows total, two on Saturday, Aug. 14 (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and one on Sunday (2 p.m.).

A unique thing about the performance, Snow said, was that they will have actual high school students taking up the leading roles.

One of those cast members is Brooklynn Rydman, 15, who plays the antagonist, Sharpay Evans. Her character is the driving force behind the major conflicts in the plot, as she tries to sabotage the relationship between the two other main characters, Troy and Gabriella, while trying to win a talent show at the same time.

"I've never played a villain-type character before," Rydman said. "I wanted to play Gabriella at first, but once I got into (Sharpay's) character, I was happy with what I got to do with it ."

Before Saturday's performance, Ahwatukee Children's Theatre, 5051 E. Elliot Road, will be hosting an open house from 9 a.m. until noon. To find out more, call their office at (480) 705-9319.
