Arizona State University is getting experimental.

ASU is presenting “DaDa Trans iT,” an international experimental theater piece to town this week. It will play at the Empty Space Theater in Tempe tonight. “DaDa Trans iT” is a collage of poetry, visual effects and active performances.

The interactive theater piece stems from the Dada movement launched in Europe in 1916. Members of the Dada movement rejected conventional art and philosophy and instead used thought provoking performances to push society toward self-awareness.

The Dada movement inspired several people, including Vladimir Lenin and James Joyce, who later went on to write “Ullysses.” Now, director AristitaAlbacan has modernized the show to help bring the spotlight to Romania.

“The idea was the director from Romania was thinking how could she do something that would bring Romania to the spotlight and bring the Romanian thinkers to the spotlight,” said ItiAgnihotri of the ASU media relations department.

The show might be interactive, but they don’t want the audience to notice that.

“The actors are basically trying to interact within the audience without the audience realizing it,” Agnihotri said.

The unconventional piece also doesn’t have a conventional seating arrangement. The audience sits on the floor and the actors walk among the audience.

“They are trying to make it interactive and a more intimate setting,” Agnihotri said.

The 45-minute show is building on the same liberating principles in the Dada movement.

“She (the director) is looking for people to come out of it liberated from their daily lives,” Agnihotri said. “What they’re trying to do is reset everything in your brain, reset your thinking. Free your mind.”

“DaDa Trans iT” will do two performances at the Empty Space Theater, 1 W. Rio Salado Parkway in Tempe, on March 20 at 6 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. Both are free and open to the public.
