More than 200 Desert Vista High School students will take the stage on Friday, May 4, to perform classic songs of fan favorite Disney movies for the community.

There will be two shows Friday, one starting at 4 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., open to the public and performed in the Desert Vista auditorium, 16440 S. 32nd St.

Disney will be the theme in this year’s performance, called the Choir POPS Concert, which featured all five of the different Desert Vista choirs.

Sprinkled among full choir performances will be 16 “specialty” acts by solos, duets, and groups, which had to audition for a place in the showcase. Each specialty act was designed and performed by students themselves, who then were chosen for a spot.

“We had so many great auditions that we decided to bump up the number to 16,” said Andrew De Valk, choir director for Desert Vista. “There were over 70 auditioned acts so it was tough to choose because there were so many talented performances.”

There will be 24 acts total, with melodies that include all members of a particular choir, doing a number of songs from such Disney movies like the Lion King, which, in that particular case, has a total of 57 students on stage performing multiple songs from the movie.

De Valk said that each school in the Tempe Union High School District does a Choir POPS Concert in one form or another, and this is only the second time he and his students have done one with a Disney theme.

He previously worked at Corona del Sol High School that involved classic Disney songs and performances.

“The kids really knock it out,” he said. “It’s great music that people just know and love.”

Each show will run for two hours. Tickets are $7 for students and $10 for adults and can be purchased at the Desert Vista bookstore.
