What if you could do prom all over again?

At “The Awesome ’80s Prom,” a high school dance do-over opening Monday at Chandler Center for the Arts, you’ll see the same big hair, blue eyeshadow and bad clothes — but you can appreciate them without the teenage angst of your first time around.

The interactive theater production envelopes the audience in what feels like a real prom, with action taking place on the dance floor, by the bar and even in the bathrooms.

Actors portraying stereotypical characters from 1980s teen movies — the captain of the football team, the foreign exchange student, the geek, the head cheerleader — will dance alongside audience members, competing for votes to win prom king and queen.

Instead of traditional theater seating, ticketholders are invited to “get footloose,” moonwalking, joining in the breakdance circle, or even scoring a dance with the football captain. You can also just sit back and watch the drama unfold, hit the cash bar or pose in the photo booth.

Eighties attire — shoulder pads, teased hair, members only jackets — is encouraged but not required. Hit songs of the decade and drinks begin at 7:30 p.m., the show starts at 8 p.m.

The show is a good bet for celebrating a bachelorette party, birthday, class reunion or anniversary.
