Tempted to grow your own veggies but not sure where to start? Mesa Urban Garden is offering a free class Saturday, Oct. 19, on vegetable gardening basics.

Presenter Vynnie McDaniels, whose handiwork has appeared in Phoenix Home & Garden, Popular Mechanics, and Dwell magazines, will share 10 tips on how to get your soil in shape, what plants to choose, and how to plant them correctly. He will also cover methods for watering, the importance of mulch, and ways to protect your garden from pests and weather.

The workshop is ideal for beginners and will include instruction, demonstrations and time for questions. It starts at 9 a.m. at the garden at 212 E. First Ave.
