A long-running, one-man comedy show about an eccentric family is coming to the Herberger Theatre in downtown Phoenix, starting today.

Written by Steve Solomon, "My Mother's Italian, My Father's Jewish and I'm in Therapy!," stars Ron Tobin, who will perform at least 20 different characters and voices over the course of the show. Solomon said he drew from his own experiences growing up to form the characters as they appear in the show.

"Having grown up in a mixed family, when I look back at the chaos, it produced some gems that really stop the show," he said. "It's loving chaos is the best way I can say it. Back then, it probably wasn't that funny at the time, but now I can look back at those experiences in a different light."

The show started touring in 2003 and has since made stops on Broadway, Canada, South Africa, and many cities around the world.

"A lot of people relate to it - everyone has a mother and a father," Solomon said. "Before I wrote the show, I was doing comedy, just telling these stories about my family and people related to it."

A highlight of the show, he said, is when he, or Tobin in this case, does a back and forth between his Jewish grandmother and Italian mother.

"She's trying to convince her to stay kosher," Solomon said. "It goes back and forth, back and forth, and it's just hilarious."

The show starts Jan. 18 and goes through Feb. 19 at the Herberger, 222 E. Monroe St. Tickets range from $39.50 to $49.50. Performances are Wednesdays at 2 and 7 p.m.; Thursdays at 7 p.m.; Fridays at 8 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sundays at 2 and 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.ItalianJewish.com, www.herbergertheater.org, or by calling (602) 252-8497.
