Do the zoo by day, and roast alive. Venture to the park after dark, and you'll save money and get in on numerous special activities rolled out just for Prowl and Play.

The zoo's summer-evening event, held 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 10, features a screening of Disney's "Teen Beach Movie," a magic show, "Critter Chats" with small animals and their handlers, and the chance to make sidewalk chalk art.

Other activities:

  • water play at Leapin' Lagoon and Yakulla Caverns splash playgrounds
  • Urban Stew: Explore the sounds of the wild by playing hand-made instruments made of old machine parts, digital micro-controllers, and household objects.
  • Plasma Robotics: Check out the Frisbee and basketball tossing robots built by Mesa's award winning Plasma Robotics team, based out of Red Mountain High School!
  • ASU LROC Science Mission Team: Want to learn more about NASA's exploration of the Moon? Come talk to a Lunar Scientist.
  • SEDS-ASU: What do baby food, horses and velcro have to do with space? Find out from students while designing an astronaut space suit and building a constellation finder.
  • Tropics Trek: stroll around the lake and talk with a Night Camp Instructor to learn more about Komodo dragons, Asian elephants, orangutans and squirrel monkeys at Monkey Village.
  • Walking Water Balls: Walking on water in one of six giant hamster balls.
  • Giraffe Encounter
  • Camel Rides
  • Stingray Bay
  • Safari Train
  • Carousel rides

Tickets to Prowl and Play are $8 per person age 3 and older. Most activities are free, but some require an additional fee. For information, call (602) 273-1341 or visit
