The Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band is gearing up for its Summer Celebration Concert this Thursday at the Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC).

The band typically has two performances at the ARC; one during the summer and the other during the holiday season.

The band originally started within the ARC community and would rehearse at the center, said Brendan Anderson, director of bands.

“It’s sort of like our homecoming,” he said. “In the summer, we perform a wide variety of music that a concert band like ours would perform.”

Some of the music the Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band will perform during the Summer Celebration Concert will consist of jazz, Broadway and traditional music.

“We really try to touch on every genre of music,” Anderson said.

During the concert, Anderson said they will be doing recognitions to the community such as giving music scholarships to five students from Kyrene Middle School and three from Mountain Pointe High School, and thanking the ARC community for its support.

Each student will receive a scholarship that ranges from $200 to $300.

“We invite the scholarship winners to join us for one of the pieces,” Anderson said. “The Ahwatukee Recreation Center community through their donations to the band are really the main funders of that scholarship program.”

The Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band will also pay tribute to members who have served in the military.

“We pack a lot into one evening of music, but we make sure there is a little something for everybody and it’s really tied close to the community,” Anderson said.

Deb Powers, activities director at the ARC, said she was excited about the performance because it would be her first time seeing the concert perform since becoming activities director in November.

“I understand that this is a very popular event here, and the audience really enjoys it and has a wonderful time,” Powers said. “I’m looking forward to the whole event because I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about them.”

The Ahwatukee Foothills Concert Band will perform at the ARC, 5001 E. Cheyenne Drive, on Thursday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m.

There is no admission charge to attend the event.
