There are 12 Horizon Honors High School seniors starring in the upcoming production of “Guys and Dolls” and they all say they want their last performance to be the best.

It doesn’t hurt that it is the first time the Broadway classic has been performed at the school and is also one of the most physically demanding.

“It raised the dancing bar,” said Ashlee Bahr, who plays Sarah Brown and is also a vocal co-captain. “We did full days and weeks of just choreography, and we hadn’t done that before.”

“Guys and Dolls” will play at Horizon, 16233 S. 48th St., for eight performances beginning this Friday, April 13. It runs on April 13, 14, 20, and 21 at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day.

The individual stories of Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson, Adelaide, and Brown, and how they all entwine together has made this production a cast-favorite, according to the seniors.

“(The story) is just so out there — it’s very rich with characters,” said Sage Greenawalt, who plays Sky Masterson. “It’s a comedy, but it’s also like a double love story. It’s not just one story.”

For the past week, the cast has been rehearsing from 2:30 to 9 p.m. each day. But even when they feel worn out or tired, that idea sparks, telling them this is their last production in high school and it is also a lot of fun.

“Even when I hate it, I love it,” said Kacie Moss, who is in the ensemble. “I can’t even tell you how excited I am (for opening night).”

The actors’ dedication to their characters becomes apparent to their peers when they are walking down the halls and conversing in the timely accents that are a staple of “Guys and Dolls.” It is safe to say they have worked hard to “become” their characters.

“We converse as the characters would and really never stop thinking about how these characters would respond to the situations going on in our daily lives,” said Gianni Del Franco, who plays Nathan Detroit.

The production will take place in the multi-purpose room and to find out more information, contact the charter school at (480) 659-3000.
