Know how even if you live for skinnies and tunic tops you get the urge once in a while to slip into a sparkly dress and strappy heels? That’s kind of how the new “Hidden Realism” art show is striking us. Sure, we love our nearby favorites, but heading to Scottsdale to see these brain-trippingly realistic creations could really liven up date night.

Gallery J2 — a clean, modern space akin to what you’d see in New York or Los Angeles — is hosting an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by reclusive California artist Kevork Cholakian. A free reception, slated for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 23, includes food, Napa Valley wines and live Spanish guitar — as well as an appearance by the artist himself.

Pieces from the show, which kind of meld influences from pop art and painting’s Dutch Old Masters, will be featured in the November issue of “American Art Collector” and were recently spotlighted by “Artist Portfolio.” Gallery J2 is at 10345 N. Scottsdale Road. For information, visit
