The Ahwatukee Brass Quintet will play the National Anthem at its first spring training game this week in Scottsdale.

Though they’ve played for the Diamondbacks during season games, the five-member group based in Ahwatukee is on new turf as they get a taste of the spring training atmosphere at Salt River Fields this Friday, March 15.

“It’s going to be fun, we hear it’s a great stadium and a different environment,” said trumpet player Skip Welch.

While the tight-knit ensemble started in 2008, they have rooted themselves among the Sunday crowds at Foothills Baptist Church and Mountain View Lutheran Church.

“It’s really our genesis, we started out playing at churches,” Welch said.

Aiming to maintain their community presence, Welch said teaching kids to appreciate the music style that surrounds brass instruments is important.

“It’s really about not letting that genre of music fade,” he said.

Remembering a time when we was inspired by seeing a music group play brass instruments, Welch said that exposure was the beginning of his journey playing trumpet.

“When we play sometimes there’s a reaction from kids, but you don’t know how deep it goes once the seed is planted,” he said.

Though the group doesn’t have any foreseeable plans for future gigs set in stone, Welch said they are hoping to participate in more school band concerts.

Salt River Fields is located at 7555 N. Pima Road in Scottsdale. The Ahwatukee Brass Quintet will be opening the game between the Diamondbacks and the Oakland Athletics at 1:10 p.m.
