If you’ve been drawn to the idea of a sustainable lifestyle — growing your own veggies, making compost, raising chickens — but have yet to get started, you might find the motivation to get rolling in this one-day course.

“Drylands,” a day of in-depth discussion offered by Valley Permaculture Alliance, aims to empower participants to turn their backyards into an abundant source of food, fun and family pride.

Speakers will include Greg Peterson, founder of The Urban Farm, an organization that has helped form 10,000 backyard farms; Rachel Bess, a proponent of backyard chickens; and Mark Rhine, an expert in aquaponics, a system that grows plants in water with fish and other creatures.

The course is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Maricopa County Extension Office at 4341 E. Broadway Road, Phoenix. Tickets purchased in advance cost $100 and tickets the door are $125.
