A music school that focuses on live performance will be opening its doors in Ahwatukee Foothills on Saturday, Aug. 24.
School of Rock has more than 100 locations nationwide and even some in Mexico and Ireland. The latest location, at 4645 E. Chandler Blvd., will bring the school’s unique way of teaching music to kids and adults in Ahwatukee Foothills.
“The guy who started School of Rock had a good point, he said ‘You wouldn’t go to basketball practice and never play a game,’” said Megan Rousey, general manage of the new location. “The whole idea for School of Rock centered around going to music lessons and working toward a gig or a production. That’s how we’re a little bit different. There’s a goal.”
School of Rock teaches kids vocals, guitar, keyboard, drums or bass using songs from well-known artists. The students have a personal lesson once a week and a group lesson once a week. The students study music by a certain group for four months and at the end of the four-month season a venue is booked and students perform for a live audience in their first gig.
Rousey said students learn a broad spectrum of music types and study artists from different decades, including current music on the radio. It’s all building up knowledge they can use in the future when students write their own music or develop their own style.
School of Rock has been open in Scottsdale for about a year and the Ahwatukee location will be exactly the same, Rousey said. The building itself has two large rehearsal rooms, a performance stage and a full recording studio. Perspective students and their parents will be welcome to tour the facility during the school’s grand opening Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
During the grand opening there will be live music and a food truck. There will also be several giveaways and prizes.
The school will be preregistering students who have reached out to the school already. For more details on the school, visit schoolofrock.com and select the Ahwatukee location.
“It’s really music lessons done differently,” said Rousey. “Our focus is to create great musicians and build kids with confidence who can go out into the world and be the best people they can be.”
