To most who know or have been trained by Shannon Sorrels, you know she isn’t a “pat-on-the-head” kind of trainer.

Her snarky, to-the-point style of teaching and now writing makes Sorrels loved and on occasions criticized. But for the Ahwatukee Foothills resident and Physix Fitness Center owner, the much anticipated release of her first book, “...Then Just Stay Fat,” has been a relief.

“It’s kind of cathartic,” said Sorrels. “It has been in the works for two years, and now that it is finished, I don’t know what to do with myself.”

Admitting that writing has always been a goal of hers, namely in fiction writing, Sorrels said her inspiration came from owning the fitness center.

“When I started (Physix), I was feeling frustrated with clients not getting things,” she said. Hearing excuse after excuse from some clients early on about why their fitness lifestyles or bodies weren’t healthy, Sorrels said she addressed a lot of her opinions in the new book. The attention-grabbing title also served as a perfect comeback to the excuses.

“Ultimately, I want people to make changes and keep them that way,” she said.

Since opening the local fitness center in 2009, Sorrels said she has seen a good amount of clients’ lives take a turn for the better.

One client has lost 100 pounds in two years and went from not being able to jog down the street, to now having completed a half marathon. Another client who took daily medications for blood pressure and cholesterol, no longer needs them.

“The center is my No. 1 focus,” Sorrels said.

The book was just released on Amazon for the Kindle. Sorrel plans to have a print edition added to Amazon stock within the next couple of months.

So far, according to Sorrels, the book has received good acclaim from her clients and a few others. Her book was also featured on Amazon’s Top 100 list for Humor Essays. It mostly covers the topic of food as a form of calories, not falling into diet fads, and healthy weight management.

Described as a non-traditional how-to-lose-weight manual, the conversation starting nature of the book is aimed to not only get people thinking differently about food and weight, but also to laugh.

“If you’re looking for another how-to book or pat on the head, this isn’t the book for you,” Sorrels said with a giggle. “So many fitness books now are about the same things, (this book) cuts through the noise.”
