Phoenix’s flagship art venue will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month beginning in September with a film festival, salsa music and two compelling exhibitions.

Festivities begin with Salsa y Salsa on Friday, Sept. 6, at Phoenix Art Museum. The free event is open to the public and will feature live salsa band Carlos Rivas y MexSal, along with salsa tastings from local restaurants. Salsa dancers will perform and provide impromptu salsa lessons for visitors to the museum.

Later in September, the Cine Latino Film Festival, now in its third year, will screen a range of films from across Latin America, including dramas, comedies, shorts and documentaries that have premiered at major film festivals around the world.

In addition to the film festival, two exhibitions will open. Beginning Sept. 21, the museum will present “Rufino Tamayo: Master Printmaker,” featuring the work of a prolific Mexican artist known for his paintings and his prints. “Xul Solar and Jorge Luis Borges: The Art of Friendship,” opens Oct. 2. The exhibition includes artwork that has rarely been viewed outside of Argentina and shines a light on the creative symbiosis between friends Xul Solar, an artist, and famous Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges.
