Local actors looking to audition for a production never done before on Ahwatukee Children's Theatre's (ACT) main stage, can bring their talents to theater this Friday.
The ACT directors are looking for 30-35 performers to bring the show, "Thoroughly Modern Millie," a time-piece set in 1920s New York City, to life.
It is a musical that revolves around Millie, who just moved to the big city from the country and gets her first job. She discovers that women are being kidnapped at the hotel in which she is living, and along with foiling plans of the evil woman, Millie finds time to balance her romantic relationships as well.
"The woman at the hotel who is kidnapping the girls is a goofy, silly character," co-director of the show, Bailey Isenberg, said. "There's a love story and, overall, it is a fun and lighthearted show."
Isenberg is co-directing with Melissa Snow to bring the story of Millie to the main stage of ACT. Being the inaugural show, issues can arise, but Isenberg said they have a helpful support staff and there is a lot of collaboration between the directors, set and costume designers.
"Basically at first what happens is, we will sit down and discuss what the vision is - how do we keep it lighthearted?" she said. "It is hard at first because all you are looking at are the pages and words in a script and you ask yourself, ‘What does everything look like?'"
The auditions take place Jan. 13 at ACT, 5051 E. Elliot Road. Isenberg noted that it is a singing audition and that potential actors must bring a song to perform. The callback list will be posted at www.azact.org that night for a 9 a.m. callback Saturday, Jan. 14. To find out more, call ACT at (480) 705-9319.
