After 17 years at the same location, The Kimberly Lewis School of Dance is moving to a new Ahwatukee Foothills location with a new, nondescript name.

"I wanted to go big or go home. It's a state-of-the-art facility and it's so fresh and new, so I wanted the name to change, too," founder Kimberly Lewis said.

When asked if she felt that removing her name from the business would make the studio less recognizable, Lewis replied that it was a necessary change in order for the studio to enter a new era.

The new studio is at 4910 E. Chandler Blvd., 2.5 miles from the old location at 3820 E. Ray Road.

"It doesn't matter what building it's in, it will be successful. The studio is my daughter Sophia's home away from home" said KLSD client Delissa Pope.

Dance Studio 111 - named for its location in Suite 111 of a shopping center that is also home to Madison Avenue Spa and LA Fitness - features a 10,000-square-foot space with four dance studios, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, state-of-the-art "marley-type" flooring, wireless Internet and a café area.

Dance Studio 111 will also offer voice lessons and musical theater classes - a schedule addition Lewis said she thought was a necessity.

"You have to teach students to be a triple threat. It can't just be about dance," she said.

Lewis expects the studio to be very busy in its first month open.

Auditions for theater, company and the Ahwatukee Foothills Nutcracker Ballet are scheduled for August.

"There will be a lot of new faces," Pope said.

Lewis stressed that although the studio has a reputation for winning national competitions it will continue to be family oriented with a positive attitude.

"We care about every student. I've heard people say that my studio is expensive, but we have kept our prices the same for the last five years, and they will stay the same at Dance Studio 111," she said.

Erica Tiffany is interning this semester for the Ahwatukee Foothills News. She is a senior at Arizona State University.
