Residents can celebrate Halloween early with activities at Ahwatukee Foothills churches this weekend.
Tomorrow night, Oct. 27, Living Word Ahwatukee will be hosting a Harvest Festival in its parking lot, 14647 S. 50th St.; Mountain Park Community Church will be having a Trunk or Treat, 2408 E. Pecos Road; and Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11001 S. 48th St., will be hosting its Fifth Annual Chili Cook-off. All parties are open to the public.
Pastor Jeff Zubeck of Living Word said though the Harvest Festival is being put on by the church it will not be a religious event.
“The festival will just be something fun for families to come out and do,” Zubeck said. “We’ll have a bunch of carnival-style games put together and the kids will leave with tons of candy. It’s just a fun thing.”
The festival will go on from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be hamburgers and hotdogs for sale and games for kids to play. There is no cost to attend the event or to play the games, but Living Word has partnered with St. Mary’s Food Bank and is asking that attendees bring some non-perishable food items to be donated to the food bank.
“Their food banks are down about 50 percent from where they were this time last year,” Zubeck said. “We’re not going to make that up, but we want to do what we can.”

At Mountain Park Community Church residents are invited to dress up and take part in the Trunk or Treat from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be candy and plenty of free activities for the kids.
“It’ll be a night of family fun,” said Margo Duba of Mountain Park Community Church. “We’ll have bouncies, a petting zoo, and just trunks decorated and people passing out candy.”
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the Fifth Annual Chili Cook-off at Mountain View Lutheran Church where $1 voting tickets will be available. All proceeds will support music ministries at the church.
Guests will also be treated to a performance from The Rolland Family Fiddling Ensemble. For more information, call (480) 893-2579 or visit www.mvlutheran.org.
