Classic Car Show

This time of year, we’ll take nearly any excuse to get out and enjoy the weather. Fortunately, Chandler’s got a good one in its Feb. 23 Classic Car and Hot Rod Show.

Founded in 2003 by Maury Williamson and the late Jerry Biondi, owners of San Marcos Place’s Country Clipper Barber Shop, the show gives folks a chance to check out walkable downtown Chandler and raises money for local causes.

About 250 cool old cars will be on display, says Williamson, and there are other attractions, too.

“This year we are actually having the KRIZ and KRUX 50th deejay reunion as a part of the car show. KRIZ and KRUX used to be old ’50s and ’60s radio stations here in the Valley, with radio announcers like W. Stephen Martin and Bruce Moody and even the voice of Tony the Tiger, Lee Marshall. Wallace and Ladmo were on there, too,” he says.

Martin will host a free fan forum 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. the day of the car show at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort.

The bands Panhead Ronnie and Star will supply live music for the larger event, and vendors will sell carnival- and fair-style foods. There’s also a beer and wine garden.

Proceeds benefit three non-profit charities: Chandler-based Dogs 4 Vets matches disabled armed services veterans with service dogs. Gilbert’s Well-Founded Hope helps restore the lives of traumatized young victims of sex trafficking. The Scott Detherage Foundation awards college scholarships to disadvantaged students living in the Chandler area, in memory of Detherage, a child advocate and City of Chandler Housing Youth Program Coordinator.

Now in its 10th year, the car show has raised more than $90,000 for local charities, according to its website.
