Although a relatively young community, Ahwatukee Foothills has already produced its number of iconic figures. Among the nationally recognized and beloved figures is singer John O’Callaghan.

Mountain Pointe alum O’Callaghan started The Maine in 2007 with fellow band mates Kennedy Brock, Jared Monaco, Garrett Nickelsen and Pat Kirch. O’Callaghan provides lead vocals with vocal back-up and rhythmical strumming from Brock, sweet guitar melodies from Monaco, bass accompaniment from Nickelsen, and drum beats from Kirch.

Now a highly respected band, The Maine traces its beginnings to MySpace and word of mouth. Gaining an almost-religious following in the process, The Maine has been a part of four successful tours including the 2009 Van’s Warped Tour.

Over just three years, the band has expanded its fan base and has signed with major recording company, Fearless Records. Their debut album, Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, was a clear hit. Buoyed by their initial success, represented by selling 113,000 albums and 674,000 digital singles, the band has released its second album, Black & White.

Released on July 13, Black & White explores newer musical grounds. Compared to its more pop-punk sounding predecessor, the new release draws on more classically American rock-n-roll influences while still engaging in universally relatable themes and maintaining the band’s distinct character and fun.

When describing the new album, O’Callaghan explained that, “We’re trying to go for more of a raw feel - really just a free, loose record.”

This summer, the band will be on the road again headlining for the first time on the “An Evening with the Maine” tour. For interested Ahwatukee residents, the closest concert will be Aug. 27 at the Nile Theatre in Mesa.

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Timothy Lee is a senior at Desert Vista High School. He is interning this summer for the Ahwatukee Foothills News.
