The cast of The Color Purple was bursting with talent when the production came to the Valley last week.

With music being a strong and powerful part of the story, it was perfectly staged by the pit and the soloists had voices that came from the soul. Anyone who has read the book written by Marsha Norman knows that this story is no fairy tale.

The story covers abuse, love, sex, God and prejudice. It moves quickly through many emotions but, in the end, Celie is able to over come all her trials and find her family again.

I would recommend seeing this production the next time it's in town.

Allison Hurtado is interning this semester for the Ahwatukee Foothills News. She is a junior at Arizona State University.

Marsha Norman wrote the libretto for The Color Purple, not the book. The original novel on which the movie and musical are based was written by Alice Walker.
