The staff and students of Kyrene de los Cerritos welcomed author Sean Covey to their campus on Jan. 27 and showed how their school has integrated his 7 Habits into daily instruction.

Covey, author of the best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, visited classrooms in each grade level and observed how his "habits" have played a part in the school's transition. Cerritos adopted the 7 Habits at the beginning of the school year and now utilizes them as part of a program entitled, "The Leader in Me," in conjunction with the themes in a book written by Covey's father, Stephen Covey.

In Sean Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, he uses the habits outlined in his father's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Those include: Be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand, then to be understood; synergize; sharpen the saw.

"It's amazing to see how quickly the students have adapted to it and how they are using it everyday," Cerritos Principal Darcy DiCosmo said.

Last school year several teachers integrated the habits and goals set forth in the books and during the summer, DiCosmo and staff decided to take it school-wide.

"It was successful in those classrooms and we were excited to implement across all grade levels," she said.

Kindergarten teacher Kali Burch praised the program and took six Cerritos students to speak at "Enhancing Elementary Greatness in our Community," a conference last Thursday that focused on how "The Leader in Me" has impacted local elementary schools in Phoenix.

"They spoke about why they liked the program and how it has affected their day-to-day learning," Burch said. "It is really interesting to hear them use the vocabulary in the books and see how excited they are about reading."
