Stand-up comedian Steve Byrne is in Phoenix this weekend for the “Sullivan and Son Comedy Tour,” promoting his new TBS sitcom.

Performing with co-stars and fellow stand-up comedians Owen Benjamin, Roy Wood Jr., and Ahmed Ahmed, the comedy tour will be at downtown Phoenix’s new venue Stand Up Live.

Co-creator and star of the show, “Sullivan and Son,” Byrne said coming back to stand-up comedy after taking a hiatus to write the show was a challenge.

“For me it was just getting the wheels greased again,” said Byrne, who got his start in stand-up.

Part of a seemingly whirlwind of a year, Byrne’s usual touring was put on hold for three months to film the show. Wasting no time, the tour was already on day two of its schedule that goes through September, a couple of days after the sitcom’s pilot aired.

“It’s exciting,” said Bryne of now touring with his co-stars, who are also longtime friends of his.

“I wrote in their names for characters before they even were cast,” said Byrne, “I love their stand-up and knew America would be comfortable with them.”

Since the show premiered on July 19, viewers have been receptive, Byrne said.

Though Byrne admits that the transition to acting from stand-up comedy isn’t exactly easy.

“It’s a different muscle, and none (of us) are as good actors as we are stand-up,” said Byrne, “but as the show has gone on, you can see an improvement.”

Regardless, Byrne said seeing his material acted out and the audience enjoying it is a “complete blast.”

After his start in comedy 14 years ago in a small, New York club, Byrne said he never thought he’d end up in comedy.

“I never thought in a million years it would take me into a career,” Byrne added.

“The Sullivan and Son Comedy Tour” will continue its six Phoenix shows tonight at Stand Up Live, 50 W. Jefferson St.
