“Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Four little words that have created a buzz among female readers country-wide is now coming to Phoenix as a live, musical parody, starring Mountain Pointe High School graduate and Ahwatukee native Michelle Vezilj.
“Spank! A Fifty Shades Parody” takes its audiences through all the racy, uncomfortable content with a parodied performance, making fun of the popular novel by British author, E.L. James.
“Our show is pretty unique, it’s a giant celebration for women,” said Vezilj, who stars as Tasha Woode in the show that starts its Phoenix dates on Feb. 27.
“Fifty Shades” follows the relationship of a recent college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business mogul, Christian Grey.
The parody’s story line takes the audience through the author’s creation of the novel, with the characters of the young couple serving as embodied ideas from the writers’ “imagination.”
With improv acting and even participation from the audience, Vezilj said the show is a “good night out.”
After high school, Vezilj studied at the The University of the Arts in Philadelphia before moving to New York to pursue a career in musical theater.
While in Arizona, Vezilj was part of several productions at Mountain Pointe and spent nearly two years at Valley Youth Theater in central Phoenix.
“That was the most amazing experience of my childhood,” Vezilj said. “Valley Youth Theater was the reason why I’ve been able to get this far.”
As her first nation-wide tour, Vezilj said being on the cast of “Spank” has already become a memorable experience for her.
“I’ve been pretty blessed, I’ve never done a comedy before,” she said. “I’m just happy they gave me a chance.”
“Spank!” will be performed at the Orpheum Theater, 203 W. Adams St., in Phoenix Feb. 27-28 and March 1-2. For tickets, visit ticketmaster.com and search for “Spank!”
