Six months after fire destroyed Copperstar Repertory Company’s offices and scene and costume shops, the East Valley theater company is scheduled to host its first production of “Les Misérables School Edition.”

Slated for March 27-30 at Mesa Arts Center, the production is a chance for young people to see the story of the popular 2012 movie and 1862 Victor Hugo novel acted and sung by other kids. An abridged version that maintains the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written, the “School Edition” of Les Mis is an entirely sung pop opera.

Its cast includes 56 performers ages 19 and younger. Bronson David Todd, 16, of Mesa stars as “Jean Valjean” with Brandon Bellerson, 17, of Chandler as “Javert.” “Fantine” is double cast by Corinne Jones, 17, of Gilbert and Maddie Williams, 15, of Chandler. Gilbert’s Mariah Tanner, 17, and Marianne Muglia, 16, both play “Cosette.” “Marius” and “Eponine” are played by James Dyer, 16, of Mesa and the double-casting of Shanti Okawa, 17, of Chandler and Chloe Santos, 16, of Gilbert, respectively.

“After losing almost everything, we are so excited to be back, continuing to entertain Valley audiences. We are so grateful to the community to supporting us through this difficult time and we feel a great way to repay everyone’s kindness is to present this amazing production,” said Mary-Jo Okawa of Chandler, Copperstar’s Artistic Producing Director and Founder, in a release.

The company has raised about $8,000 in donations thus far via Razoo.com to build a new studio.

Tickets start at $22 and are on sale now CopperstarRep.org or by calling (480) 644-6500.
