[Question] ||| "Which is better: an electric or manual toothbrush?"

[Answer] |||  "Similar results can be achieved with either an electric or manual toothbrush provided you are using both properly and brushing for the same length of time; however, experts argue that electric toothbrushes make it easier to achieve optimal results.

The ADA recommends brushing for two minutes.  Electric toothbrushes often have a built in timer to help patients be aware of how long they are brushing.  Studies show that manual users can average as low as 30 seconds to brush their teeth, well below the two minute recommendation.  Brushing too hard can cause damage to your gums.  Some electric toothbrushes have a pressure sensor that stops the toothbrush from pulsating if you are brushing too hard.

The larger handle on electric toothbrushes can be easier to use for older patients and patients with limited dexterity.  The orthodontic patient will find it easier to clean around their brackets/wires and orthodontic appliances with an electric toothbrush.

Whether using an electric or a manual toothbrush you need to choose the correct head size.  If the toothbrush you are using is too large you can miss areas.  You should choose a soft, rounded end, and polished bristle.  Whether electric or manual, toothbrush heads deteriorate and should be replaced about every three months (sooner if you have been ill).

Talk to your dentist/hygienist, they will help you choose the right toothbrush for your oral health.  Bring your toothbrush to your next cleaning/exam so they can look at it.  You can also demonstrate your brushing technique so your dentist/hygienist can make sure you are brushing correctly."

In a final push for a sweeping healthcare overhaul, President Barack Obama urged a simple "up-or-down" vote on the legislation. What would your vote be?
Up! Let's get this thing passed already!
The proposals look good on paper, but I'm still hesitant about its execution.
Down. It's time to go back to the drawing board.
