DV Orchestra meets goal at ice cream social

Desert Vista Orchestra students met their coin collection goal through generous donations of patrons and a matching campaign from MidFirst Bank, who brought their coin van and joined the students during their annual ice cream social concert and fundraiser on Sept. 13. The students raised $1,090, and MidFirst Bank matched the first $1,000, bringing the total to more than $2,000. Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to the orchestras at Akimel A-al and Altadena middle schools.

DV's next orchestra concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in the auditorium at Desert Vista High School.

Johnson, teammates win national title

A team of Phoenix youths, including Desert Vista High School sophomore Kyle Johnson, continued a string of outstanding marksmanship performances by winning a national title at the Scholastic Clay Target Program National Skeet and Sporting Clays Championships in Sparta, Ill., Aug. 1 and 2. The Red Mountain Target Terminators team hit 570 out of 600 targets to win the skeet championship in the junior varsity division.

Arizona teams took home five medals - two gold, one silver and one bronze in skeet, and one bronze in sporting clays. Their medal total was the highest for any state.

The Red Mountain team earned the right to represent Arizona at the nationals by winning the state's Commissioners' Cup skeet and sporting clays championships in April. Johnson hit 99 out of 100 targets in skeet.

Johnson has been shooting competitively for three years and was recently selected to participate in the 2008 Junior Olympic Development Camp at the United States Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs Oct. 8 to 12.
