New Carpa Theater will present The Mighty Vandals to kick off the ninth season of Lunch Time Theater with shows at 12:10 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays, Sept. 15 to 17 and 22 to 24, in the Performance Outreach Theater at the Herberger Theater, 222 E. Monroe St. Enter under purple canopy on Van Buren.
The story, written by Ahwatukee Foothills resident James E. Garcia, is set in 1951 and is about a basketball team of mostly Mexican Americans from the rural mining town of Miami, Ariz. At that time, Arizona schools were still segregated and Miami was a place folks left if they wanted to “make it big.”
The Mighty Vandals went undefeated to win the state basketball championship, and these young players and their coach proved that passion and perseverance can overcome numerous obstacles and lead to miracles.
Tickets are $6 each and may be purchased by calling (602) 254-7399, ext. 104 or online at www.herbergertheater.org. Guests may also enjoy lunch while watching the show. Lunches must be ordered before 9 a.m. on the day of the show by calling Coffea Café at (602) 373-6570.
