High school seniors open time capsules from 4th grade

What was it like to be a fourth-grader at the start of the new Millennium?

For 11 Desert Vista High School seniors and one Horizon Honors High School senior, May 3 was the day to get together and reminisce.

"When I taught fourth grade at Kyrene Monte Vista my class of 2000 made time capsules," said Nancy Branch, Kyrene del Milenio principal. "Now, it's time to open them."

Students met Branch at Monte Vista at 11 a.m. to open their time capsules.

They pulled out letters written to them from their parents, other family members, classmates and Branch, their teacher. They also read letters they wrote to themselves about what they thought they would be like in 2008.

"They had a piece of string that showed their height in May 2000, the mean, median and mode of the class' individual waist size, trinkets that were special to each of them, Beanie Babies, jell pens and many other memories from fourth grade," Branch said. "The students all said they had been anxiously waiting to open the capsules together."

Afterwards, Branch treated the students to lunch where they enjoyed sharing memories about fourth grade.

Safety first?
Last month, Arizona became fhte first to give the go-ahead on statewide photo radar units, with 60 to be installed on the state's freeways and another 40 "mobile" van units put into play. But the state stands to make nearly $90 million during the first ye
Putting up photo radar cameras is a legitimate way to increase public safety by decreasing highway speeds.
