[Question] ||| "My hygienist wants to apply fluoride varnish after my cleaning, but, as an adult, it’s not covered by my insurance. Is it worth the $30-$35?"
[Answer] ||| "Absolutely – fluoride varnish provides protection from cavities and strengthens the seams of existing dental work too! Tooth decay occurs because the acids produced in our mouths remove the minerals from our teeth that make them strong. Fluoride varnish re-mineralizes our teeth and disrupts acid production. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and drinking fluorinated water certainly helps, but it’s not enough. The fluoride varnish treatment provided by your dentist or hygienist is at much higher strength and is the most effective adjunct available in dentistry today.
In-office fluoride varnish can be applied directly to specific areas that are sensitive or to areas especially susceptible to decay, like the margins of a crown or in between your teeth. The cost of applying fluoride varnish is substantially lower than the cost of a filling or the cost to replace a crown due to cavities and leaking dental work.
Unfortunately, some insurance companies do not understand that fluoride varnish would prove to be more cost-effective for them in the long run."
