Pay by the ounce and fat-free frozen yogurt. Sign us up.

And just about everyone else in Ahwatukee is on board as well, or so it seems.

Yoasis has been named the top “Mom and Pop” business in this year’s Best Of contest.

And while the product is oh so good, it is not even the best thing about the place owned by Sue and Brian McHugh, who are sole owners now after buying out their partners.

It is their community involvement. There are few companies, especially one that is only 2 1/2 years old, who gives back as they do.

Since Yoasis started adopting groups — sports teams, kids groups, etc., — the McHughs have given more than $43,000 back by giving a percentage of the proceeds of that week’s sales.

In others words not only is Yoasis good eats, the McHughs are good people.

“A lot of people tell me they feel at home while they are here,” Sue McHugh said. “Our place is larger (2,000 square feet) than the other places so it is a place for people to meet up and it is very kid friendly.”

As involved as Yoasis is within the community, what brings everyone in the door is that velvety smooth yogurt.

They offer 12 different flavors — five staples with the other seven rotating — and 61 different toppings — cookie dough and sprinkles are the most popular — to entice creative minds to concoct some interesting combinations.

“People like to be able to pick and choose,” she said.

When it comes to fat-free yogurt it is very clear which one the Ahwatukee community has chosen to flock to.

“We have been very fortunate,” McHugh said. “We started out with a good business plan, but you never know. We have been a great fit within the community.”
