After 26 years of teaching, Lynn Price of Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary School said she is still learning and being challenged as a teacher, aiming to produce a similar growth in her students.

“Education is so much more than just educating the child academically,” said Price, who returned to teaching 2nd grade last year after moving over to kindergarten for 18 years. “We instill a passion for knowledge and curiosity about the world.”

Since joining the Kyrene School District 11 years ago, Price said she notices a difference in curriculum.

“Everything has been stepped up, and it’s a really different experience,” she added. “But it’s a good move.”

Ready for a new challenge and having an itch for change, Price took advantage of a new spot that opened for 2nd grade and joined other teachers and staff, whom she credits to her smooth transition.

Price said that being relational with the community is also an important facet of teaching. As a three-time winner for “Best Teacher” in Ahwatukee, Price said it all goes back to relationships.

“If you’re really tied to people you keep that relationship going,” she said. “I feel totally honored and respected.”

According to Price, teaching gives her the opportunity to expose students to the importance of knowing themselves, having a hope for their own future, and self respect.

“It’s about the whole child, and teaching is much more than a career,” she said.

Though some challenges educators face like budget cuts or family dynamics are out of their control, Price chooses to keep a positive outlook and continuing her mission to teach.

“In our own little burg of Ahwatukee, we have such a great energy and it gives me so much hope for the future of our children.”
