Tammy Huston, owner of TangLed Salon, says doing hair is in her blood.

Huston grew up in and around salons with a mother who was a hair stylist.

“That’s all I ever knew,” she said. “I just feel like it’s part of who I am. Even as a little kid I would cut my brother’s hair. I didn’t know what I was doing but it turned out pretty good. It was a natural knack.”

She followed that knack and turned it into a career for herself. She’s been doing hair for the past 25 years, 18 of which were spent in Ahwatukee Foothills in salons in the area.

Her own salon space, which she shares with a partner, Lauren Dowd, opened in August.

“The last salon I left in August, wasn’t going the way I wanted,” Huston said. “Some things happened that forced Lauren Dowd and I to go out and research what was out there. We found this, put our brains together, and this is where we’re at. It was the best thing that ever happened to us.”

Huston said she’d never imagined opening her own salon, but working for herself as an independent contractor inside V-1 Salon Studios has been the best decision. The strangest thing has been learning the business side of things, but Huston said her regular customers have been there to help when she needs advice.

“I really put my heart into it,” she said. “Everything I’ve learned the past 25 years working for other people, I’ve taken the good experiences and the bad experiences, and now I’m focusing on everything that I’ve learned to do my own thing.”

Even after opening just six months ago, Huston and Dowd have already remodeled the space once. In the next year they hope to do more networking to build their business.

As far as customer service goes, Huston said she tries to listen to her customers and they’ve become family to her. It’s why so many voted for her for “Best New Business.”

“The customers that have known me for a long time are like family,” Huston said. “We’re really close. You become really connected to your clients. I’m just so grateful.”
