Service at a restaurant is as important in a dining experience as the meal is. The food may be great, but if the person bringing it to you is rude or obnoxious; it somehow loses its flavor. Alyssa Ragan knows how to keep her customers happy and the food from becoming foul.

As a waitress at On The Border in Ahwatukee for the past 2 1/2 years, Ragan has learned what the customers want and how to distinguish those who want or need more attention than others.

“Some want to be left alone, some want to be more social, some are super needy and they make sure you’re on the ball,” Alyssa Ragan said. “It is judging people a lot and knowing how to deal with all of kinds of people and making those connections and being social.”

And if that doesn’t work, she has another strategy.

“You have to keep coming back then kill them with kindness,” Ragan said.

The 22-year-old splits her time between charming her customers at On The Border and going to school. Ragan is in the physical therapy assistant program at Gateway Community College, but eventually wants to transfer to Northern Arizona University for physical therapy.

She was also surprised to learn that she was honored in the “Best Waiter/Waitress/Bartender” category in Best Of Ahwatukee 2012, but she doesn’t necessarily agree with her new title.

“I kind of thought it was a joke at first,” Ragan said. “I wouldn’t say I’m the top three, but it’s nice that they at least think that I’m up there. Thank you!”
