1st place: Sarah Elliot (Kyrene de la Colina Elementary)

Ms. Sarah Elliott has been teaching first grade for five years, with the past two years being in the Kyrene School District at Kyrene de la Colina Elementary School, and her favorite part of teaching first grade is the change she sees in her children as they grow and learn throughout the school year.

“I love the amount of growth that the kids show through the entire school year,” Ms. Elliott said. “They come in learning to read and leave reading because they enjoy it.”

Ms. Elliott feels honored that her students and parents would choose her out of all the other talented teachers in the area.

“The award is so special, especially since it’s from our whole community,” she said. “I’ve never had an honor like this, but to be recognized by my student’s parents in this way is special. I’m thinking they voted because they’re happy with their students’ progress.”

Parents play a vital role in Ms. Elliott’s first grade classroom by volunteering on a weekly basis.

“I have parents in my room ever day, and some days I’m lucky enough to have more than one parent volunteer,” Ms. Elliott said. “First grade is a great time to be a parent volunteer because the grade level is all hands on deck.”

Kyrene de la Colina is located at 13612 S. 36th Street. For more information about the school, visit www.kyrene.org.
